The end-to-end design process

1. New Story Announcement

Product Management, based on their own market research in collaboration with Sales defines the next business goal, which turns into a new requirement for both Engineering and UX teams.

2. Understanding the Story

It's time to start fully learning what the new story is about. After PdM's announcement it is now my responsibility to meet with the right people to get all the information such as:

» What is the main goal story?

» Who requested the story?

» Is the acceptance criteria clear to all stakeholders?

3. Discovery & Research

This is the moment for me to start sketching low fidelity ideas and work flows that I can later show to PdM and Eng.

4. Hardening the Story

The most cross-team part of the job start here with:

» Ideal work flow and features identification (UX)

» Review work flows and features with PdM and Eng to make sure if the story doesn't need updating (PdM) and if the technical feasibility is there (Eng)

» User Testing & Validation (UX)

5. Freezing the Story

This is the time to stop adding anything else to the story by having a fixed definition of:

» Final requirements (PdM)

» Final functional requirements (UX)

» High Definition mock-ups and hand-off (UX)

» Final software concept (Eng)

6. Software Gets Made

Engineering picks up from here with:

» Following the Design System standards

» Periodical reviews with the UX Designer

» Periodical reviews with QA

» Testing with early adopters if possible

7. Launch Time!

After the story has been successfully released it's always a good idea to validate with actual users if the newly brought change brings benefit to the product by validation research with the actual end users.

Past UX work examples

Siemens

After Siemens acquired Mentor Graphics, it became apparent that in this day and age it is impossible to be a leader in PCB engineering software without a cloud based platform that would allow distributed teams to upload projects and collaborate without without limits.

It became my new UX mission to design an entire Connect platform, based on Siemens framework, that would allow PCB engineers to upload their projects from Mentor's desktop tools to the cloud and perform basic collaboration tasks, such as viewing projects, commenting, assigning projects roles and much more.

Mentor Graphics

Mentor Graphics is long standing a leader in desktop PCB engineering software for such heavy weight players as Boeing, Lockheed Martin, US Military and many more.

Being a leader for decades also sometimes means such an organization might become stagnant in their approach.

This was the case with Mentor Graphics, as their tried and true "for engineers - be engineers" meant that the software became incredibly powerful in features, but at the cost of a very complex user experience.

Luckily, someone in the organization realized this trend can longer continue and hired me to start slowly turning the engineering-only driven software towards a more pleasant experience and with a prospect for a cloud based solution on top.

Precisely / Syncsort

Precisely is mainly a BIG Data focused organization, but its software portfolio extends towards enterprise and consumer solutions as well.

Working on their Customer Engagement Solutions platform allowed me gain experience in developing new and improved user experiences for such features as conditional logic, mass communication block designer, combining multiple communication channels (video, documents, SMS) into a single campaign, barcodes for package returns and much, much more.

Pitney Bowes

Pitney Bowes has a long tradition in the mailing business, which gave it tremendous amount of address and geolocation information that later translated valuable assets during their software era.

After joining PB, I had an opportunity to work on EngageOne and Compose platform, where I designed a revamped UX/UI for a personalized video creator used to communicate with customers of such firms as AXA France.

I also designed a new UX/UI for an online archiving solution for banks, insurance companies and others who needed an efficient archival of their client documents.

Zalando

As a not-so-regural user of Zalando, I found a feature gap in their favorites tab, by not being able to create sets of clothes that you want to put together and buy.

I decided to give Zalando a helping hand and send them a small designs, so they can make my (and other users) User Experience a little more pleasant.

Let's see if they listen and implement it ;)

Gazomiar

A small personal, Eco-friendly project for an app to be used by anyone who doesn't have a sophisticated smart systems in their homes.

Usage tracking helps people be more aware of how much they are spending, thus making them waste less of natural resources.

This app gives the user the ability to scan their gas meter via phone camera and add the results to statistics.

People are more likely to want to decrease usage and increase savings this way.

Consili

Back in 2011, I worked on a project ahead of its time, where the users could arrange their entire living space in a web browser and buy all the elements with a single click.

Unfortunately the technology (originating to a company from the Netherlands) was already outdated, using DirectX and Internet Explorer with HTML5 already on the horizon, therefore the entire project died before it could reach its full potential. Yet, the experience of working in an international team, with at the time, cutting edge User Experience solution and creating a skeuomorphic UI remained with me ever since.

Affect Cosmetics

For two years I've created an entire suite of digital and DTP products for Affect Cosmetics, including an advanced website, product catalogs, product photography, event videos, loyalty cards etc.
